I drew this piece from a few pictures I took of my younger brother just breathing in the city, on a family trip. This artwork is a vivid and compelling representation of my completed PhD study titled “Canadians Redefining R&B: The Online Marketing of Drake, Justin Bieber, and Jessie Reyez.” Central to the piece is the Canadian flag, with its iconic red and white colours in reverse, and within the flag are the faces of Drake, Justin Bieber, and Jessie Reyez to reflect their contributions to redefining Canadian-ness and R&B-ness. The piece not only celebrates the individual achievements of these artists but also encapsulates the essence of their collective impact on Canadian culture. The piece was actually positioned in the background of the artist’s live Ph.D. thesis presentation to the public in achieving her Doctorate. Hence, the piece encapsulates her passion for Canadian R&B history and development, while also being a relic of an important historical moment for the artist herself.

I created this painting of Sabrina Carpenter, inspired by her poignant song “Please Please Please.” I chose to depict her in a red dress, like in her music video for the song, which symbolizes central themes in her music of passion and vulnerability. In the corner of the painting, I spray-painted a red lips emoji which has become a central marketing symbol for her 2024 album. Her expression is filled with emotion, capturing the depth she conveys in her lyrics about relationship insecurities and heartache.
I’ve been a fan of Sabrina’s music long before her recent Billboard chart successes. Her songs have been a comforting presence through my own breakups and significant life moments, making this painting deeply personal.
The rich red and gold tones of the background add warmth and intensity, enhancing the overall mood of the piece. This artwork is my tribute to Sabrina’s journey and the profound impact her music has had on my life and the lives of many others.

Growing up with a father who could fix anything and worked tirelessly on vehicles, a car-loving younger brother, and a husband passionate about all things automotive, my work as a marketer in the construction industry has deepened my fascination with sports cars, machinery, and vehicle aesthetics.
