Cultural appreciation means engaging deeply with history, people, and traditions—not just aesthetics. The kimono is more than attire; it’s a centuries-old symbol of Japanese heritage. Each style—like the vibrant furisode for young women or the elegant tomesode for married women—signifies life stages and societal roles. Wearing one wasn’t just about appearance; it was about immersing myself in its meaning, from the meticulous dressing process to understanding the significance behind every detail. The line between appreciation and appropriation lies in acknowledging these origins rather than erasing them. Appropriation happens when cultural expressions are borrowed without acknowledgment, stripping them of the history and struggles that gave them meaning. Appreciation is recognizing where something comes from, honoring those who shaped it, and engaging with it meaningfully—not just consuming it. Wearing a kimono, I didn’t just observe—I engaged, learned, and respected.
